South Carolina Oversize Permits Information
Permits
Oversize permits are valid for 7 days. Driver must have an oversize permit prior to entering the state.
Operating Time
Travel is allowed one-half hour after sunrise to one-half hour before sunset, Monday through Saturday. No Sunday travel allowed. Overweight-only up to 130,000 pounds gross is allowed continuous travel.
Restrictions
Loads over 12′ wide up to 15′ wide are prohibited in close proximity to large urban areas from 7:00 – 9:00 AM and 3:00 – 6:00 PM on school days and 4:30 – 6:00 PM on non-school days. Loads over 15′ wide must be moved Monday – Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. during school days and 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. other days. Movement is prohibited on Friday and Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day east of I-95. No travel is allowed starting at 12:00 noon the day prior to a major holiday or holiday weekend.
Speed Limit
Interstate routes – 55 mph. Non-interstate routes – 45 mph.

Length: 53’0 semitrailer (not to exceed 41′ from center of kingpin to center of rear tandem), 75′ overall including load
Overhang: 5′ rear on a 48′ trailer, none on a 53′ trailer
Weight: 80,000 Gross; Single – 20,000; Tandem – 34,000; Tridem – 35,200 depends on spacing
Routine South Carolina Overweight Permit Limits
Width: 16′
Length: 125′
Overhang: 3′ front, 10′ rear on 48′ to 53′ trailer
Height: No set limits – determined by route. Must be at least 3″ less than any overhead structure. Loads 16′ and over are required to submit a route survey.
Weight: Single – 20,000; Tandem – 40,000; Tridem – 60,000; 5 axles – 90,000; 6 axles – 110,000; 7 axles – 130,000
Escorts
Width: Over 12′ on 2-lane highways – 1 escort; over 14′ (all highway) – 2 escorts, over 16′ – 2 escorts and 2 police
Height: 16′ and higher – 1 escort with height pole and route survey
Length: Over 125′ – 2 escort
Overhang: Over 15′ rear – 2 escort
Security Measures
“Oversize Load” signs are required on all loads exceeding 12′ wide. Flags 12″ square are required on each corner for loads exceeding 12′ wide or when load extends beyond the sides more than 4″. A rotating amber beacon or strobe light is required on rear of loads exceeding 12′ wide up to 14′ wide. When width is over 14′ wide up to 16′ wide, a rotating amber beacon or strobe is required on each outer rear corner of the load. For any rear overhang of 4′ or more, a red flag must be displayed at the extremities.
