Texas Oversize Regulations

Permits
Oversize permits are valid in this state for three to five days. Must have an overweight permit prior to entering Texas.

Operating Time
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including Saturday and Sunday. Loads not exceeding 10′ wide, legal height (14′) or 100′ long with legal front and rear overhang may travel at night on Interstate system only. Overweight only may have continuous movement.

Restrictions
City or county curfew times are listed on the permit, however, most areas have no travel between 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Loads exceeding 14′ wide, 16′ high or 110′ long are restricted travel on major holidays.

Maximum posted limits unless otherwise specified on permit.

Legal Dimensions
The vehicle must have the following characteristics:

Width: 8’6″
Height: 14′
Length: 59′ semi-trailer
Overhang: 3′ front, 4′ rear
Weight: 80,000 Gross; Single – 20,000; Tandem – 34,000; Tridem – 42,000; Quad – 50,000
Routine State Oversize Limits
Width: 20′
Height: 18’11”
Length: 125′
Overhang: 25′ front, 30′ rear
Weight: Single – 25,000; Tandem – 46,000; Tridem – 60,000; Quad – 70,000
Loads exceeding these dimensions must have a route inspection certification on file prior to Texas oversize overweight issuance. The state will propose a route which we are then required to survey physically and sign off on.

Escorts
Width: Over 14′ – 1 escort, over 16′ – 2 escorts.
Height: Over 17′ – 1 escort with height pole, over 18′ – 2 escorts with height pole
Length: Over 110′ – 1 escort, over 125′ – 2 escorts.
Overhang: Over 20′ – 1 escort
*Note: If the load is over two dimensions that require escort, then 2 escorts will be required.

Security Measures
Signs are only required on escort vehicles. Red flags, 12″ square, should be placed at the widest part of the load and at all extremities and on a rear overhang of 4′ or more.
