Alaska Oversize Permits Information

Permits 
Alaska Oversize Permits are valid for 3 days, more time may be requested for distance or weather-related issues.

Operating Time
Daylight only (one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset), Monday through Saturday. Legal width, and up to 15′ high and 75′ long may travel anytime. Up to 10′ wide may travel on weekends. Over 10′ wide may travel until 12:00 noon on Saturdays. No Sunday travel.

Restrictions
No travel allowed Monday – Friday in urban areas from 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. No Sunday travel. No travel on major holidays. For holidays that fall on Sunday or Monday, any movement is prohibited from noon Friday through midnight Monday. For holidays that fall on Friday or Saturday, any movement is prohibited from noon Thursday through midnight Sunday.

Speed Limit
55 mph.

Legal Dimensions
The vehicle must have the following characteristics:

Width: 8’6″
Height: 15′
Length: 48′ semi-trailer, 75′ overall, but 53′ semi-trailers with no overall length limit are legal on designated highways if kingpin to center of rear group does not exceed 41′
Overhang: 3′ front, 4′ rear
Weight: GVW not specified. Single – 20,000 (8′ 1″ min. spacing)*; Tandem–38,000 (3′ 6″ min. spacing); Tridem–42,000 (3′ 6″ min. spacing); Quad–50,000 (3′ 6″ min. spacing)
*Note: Spread axle groups cannot carry over approximately 10,000 pounds per axle in British Columbia.

Weight: 1500,000 Gross; Single – 30,000; Tandem – 56,000; Tridem – 70,000; Quad – 80,000

Escorts
Width: Over 10’6” – 1 escort pilot car; over 12′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 14′ – 3 escort pilot cars
Height: Over 17′ – 1 escort pilot car with height pole
Length: Over 85′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 100′ – 2 escort pilot cars
Overhang: Front overhang of 3′-10′ – front escort pilot car; Rear overhang of 4’–20′ – 1 escort pilot car or can use extended light bar in lieu of escort; over 20′ – 1 escort pilot car b.

Security Measures
Permits not issued for divisible loads. “Oversize Load” signs are required on any wide load. Flags are required on over width loads/vehicles and on overhangs. Signs or flags are not required for movements that are overweight only
