Delaware Oversize Permits Information

Permits
Delaware Oversize Permits are valid for 5 days.

Operating Time
Travel is permitted from sunrise to sunset. Movement should be avoided from 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Overall dimensions not exceeding 120’ long, 15’ wide, 15’ high and GVW<120,000lbs can travel Monday through Sunday. With prior approval, loads not exceeding 75’ long, 12’ wide, 14’6” high and GVW<120,000lbs can travel from 9:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Restrictions
No travel on most major holidays. Movement is to stop 12:00 noon the day before a holiday and can begin after 9:00 a.m. the day after the holiday.

Legal Dimensions
The vehicle must have the following characteristics:

Width: 8’6″ (8′ on non-designated)
Height: 13′ 6″(13′ non-designated).
Length: Interstate and Designated Highways – 53′ semi-trailers. 70′ poles, steel, etc. including 5′ rear overhang are legal. Shall not extend more than 10′ beyond rear.
Overhang: 6′ rear, 3′ front.
Weight: 80,000 Gross Steer –20,000; Single – 20,000; Tandem – 34,000; Tridem – 42,000
Routine Delaware Oversize Permit Limits
Width: 15′
Height: 15′
Length: 120′
Weight: Single – 20,000; Tandem – 46,000; Tridem – 69,000; 5 Axles – depends on spacing; 6 or 7 Axles – 120,000.
Loads exceeding these dimensions or weights are considered Super Loads.

Escorts
Width: Over 13′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 14′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 15′ – 2 escort pilot cars and 1 State Police vehicle.
Height: At 15’ – 2 escort pilot cars; at 17’6 and over – 2 escort pilot cars with State Police vehicle; at 15′ high and over – must have route survey.
Length: 90′ or over – 1 rear escort pilot car; 100′ or over – 2 escort pilot cars; 120′ – 2 escort pilot cars and 1 State Police vehicle.
Overhang: Over 15′ rear – 1 escort pilot car unless permit specifies otherwise.
Weight: Over 120,000 pounds – 2 escort pilot cars and 1 State Police vehicle and bridge survey

Security Measures
Warning signs are required for all oversize movements. “Oversize Load” signs are to be displayed on all vehicles and loads exceeding legal width, length or rear overhang. Flags are required at the extremities on all overwide loads. Flags are required at the extreme rear of the load with rear overhang in excess of 4′; if the overhang is 2′ wide or less only 1 flag is needed; 2 flags are required if it is over 2′ wide. Rear warning lights are needed whenever the rear running lights, stop lights, turn signals or hazard lights are obstructed by the load. Warning lights (amber & red) are required for night travel.
