Virginia Oversize Permits Information

Permits
Overweight permits are valid for 13 travel days. Driver must have the permit prior to entering the state.

Operating Time
Sunrise to sunset, Monday through Saturday. Overweight or over length only, if length is not over 85’ including rear overhang are allowed continuous travel.

Restrictions
No travel is permitted within the corporate limits of cities/towns between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., except for overweight or over length only, if length is not over 85’, including rear overhang. No travel on major holidays and holiday weekends from noon the preceding weekday.

Length: 48′ semitrailer/53′ semitrailer, with 41′ kingpin to center of rear tandem; 65′ on secondary highways, 3’ front overhang, 4’ rear overhang.

Width: Over 12′ – 1 escort; over 14′ – 2 escorts; over 16′ – 3 escorts; over 18′ – case-by-case basis
Height: Over 14’5″ – 1 escort with height pole
Length: Over 120′ – 1 escort; over 150′ – 2 escorts; over 200′ – case-by-case basis
Overhang: Over 3’6″ passenger side overhang – 1 escort; over 5′ passenger side overhang – 2 escort; over 10′ front or 15′ rear – 1 escort
On 2-lane highways:

Security Measures
“Oversize Load” signs are required on all over-dimensional permit loads. Flags at least 12″ square must be placed at the extremities of a vehicle load to identify over width or secured at the end of the load to identify overhang.
